Microsoft Unveiled today Silverlight, their new rich media plugin, previously known with the project code name "WPF/E" (Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere). The new plugin will try to compete with Adobe's Flash, the universal standard for rich media on the web, but the big news is that Silverlight will not be a "Microsoft only" product but a cross-browser and cross-platform technology since it will be available for IE, Safari and Firefox.
"Content providers are seeking a way to deliver rich interactive applications using the tools and skills they already have. They want an end-to-end solution that enables them to rapidly reach multiple platforms with reasonable deployment costs," said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft. "Microsoft Silverlight delivers on this need and marks a real step forward for the industry. Silverlight is the only solution in the market today that enables content creators to tap into the broad ecosystem for Windows Media® technologies while taking the Web's rich interactive application experience to new levels."
Silverlight uses Windows Media Video and will be available also for mobile according to the press release. Developers and designers will have access to develop with this new technology using Visual Studio and Microsoft Expression. According to Microsoft a beta of Silverlight will be available in the MIX'07 from April 30rd to May 2nd in Las Vegas.
