Last week there was a press conference in Paris on Silverlight titled "Vision et Strategy Web 2.0" by Marc Jalabert, director of division developers, platform and ecosystem Microsoft, and we have posted full coverage over ITACTU our sister site in French. A similar presentation was given one day before in Seattle by Microsoft technical product manager Brian Goldfarb and his boss, Chairman Bill Gates. Thing that took my attention is that Silverlight C# is 1000x faster than Silverlight AJAX according to Marc, and this was the major performance issue from version 1.0 to 1.1 where .NET is introduced and plugin size jumped from 2Mo to 4Mo. Compared to Flash, Marc mentioned that Silverlight is 200x to 300x faster.

At the other side in Seattle, Brian demonstrated an application produced for Major League Baseball using Silverlight and Gates cited the demo as an example of what could be achieved by Silverlight developers who move beyond AJAX, which he described as "problematic" and "very complex." reported BetaNews. The demo in question was written in JavaScript and not in C#, according to Microsoft spokesperson, and Gates seems to be taken in confusion between ASP.NET AJAX and the .NET technology introduced in Silverlight 1.1. And anyway the same 1000x was given as comparative between C# and AJAX in preliminary testing. If JavaScript refer to Just-in-time compilation, Microsoft Silverlight seems to refer to 1000x-Just-in-time compilation and until we can see some real benchmarks that's what have been said over the two press conferences.
