Before and After Magazine have a great document on how to design a logo of letters. The PDF is really great explaining the different techniques to design logos using letters using stroking, angling, altering, reversing, crossing, bridging ... etc. Really excellent article for designers and also a great magazine which have been sharing its practical approach to graphic design since 1990. Certainly logo design is lot of thoughts and creativity but it is also experience and techniques.
