Slashdotted, the new bookmarking system "Places" which was planned for Firefox 2 have been disabled and removed from trunk. People testing FF2 and places have to export their bookmarks before updating to keep their old bookmarks. It's a little disappointing to have some features removed from the next Firefox release, but there is certainly a good reason which is keeping the next Firefox stable and fast while the new "Places" still unpolished and buggy. Mozilla Developer news have posted an Important Message For Branch Nightly Users explaining how to preserve your bookmarks after this change.

Places has now been disabled on the 1.8 branch. This means if you’re using a branch nightly build you need to export your Bookmarks now before updating to tomorrow’s builds, otherwise any Bookmarks you have added since Places was enabled will appear to disappear after the update (they’re still there though, you can load a Places build to view and export them).
